Female Musical Empowerment with Cherry Glazerr, Vagabon, and Shannon Lay at The Fonda

With New Year’s Eve on the horizon, it’s easy for great shows to slip through your fingers. If you were lucky, you made it to Hollywood for Cherry Glazerr at The Fonda. Anyone who found themselves at this Goldenvoice event was treated to an evening of *great* artists with female leads illuminating the stage. What better way to end a year full of Weinsteins than with some strong women rising in music!

SHANNON LAY

Shannon Lay brilliantly performed her last show of 2017, opening up for Cherry Glazerr. In matching navy blue jumpsuits, Shannon and her partner in crime/violinist Laena Geronimo, moved the audience with acoustic indie-folk tracks from her latest album “Living Water”. Lay’s performance was sharp and honed despite her spending most of December touring back and forth between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Shannon expressed how happy she was touring with talented artists such as Ty Segall and OCS, while also feeling glad to be back home in LA. She will be at Burger-a-go-go performing with Feels before she begins her European tour in March.

Following Lay was multi-instrumentalist Vagabon with her original lo-fi indie sound. Born Lætitia Tamko in Cameroon, she moved to New York at an early age and taught herself how to play guitar. Her emotional lyrics contain vivid soliloquies of lovers departing and tales New York heartbreak.

Like a quiet storm, her deep vocals strengthen as her electronic ballads crescendo.

As the curtain started to rise, Cherry Glazerr took the stage to Britney Spears’s “Toxic” before beginning their set with “Had Ten Dollaz”. The L.A. headliners drew from both 2017’s “Apocalipstick” and 2014’s “Haxel Princess”. Singer/guitarist Clementine Creevy immediately greeted the audience with a cute cheesy smile. After taking a sip from her drink, she shared that she recently turned 21. Her onstage presence was playful and her energy contagious. In a moment of youthful spontaneity, she even mooned the crowd. While flawlessly shredding on guitar, Creevy’s dance moves and booty shakes were on-point. Her antics and rebellious nature were the perfect cherry on the cake to the music of Cherry Glazerr. Be sure to look for them day two of Coachella!
