Thundercat and Ginger Root perform a sold-out Summer concert at Los Angeles' The Broad

The theme of art inspiring art was celebrated at The Broad ‘Summer Happenings’ event in Downtown Los Angeles. The Broad hosted the concert of the Summer with live performances by California artists: Thundercat, Linafornia, and Ginger Root. One of the newest exhibitions at the Broad is Takashi Murakami: Stepping on the Tall of a Rainbow. The Summer concert series promotes cultural arts and provides attendees with exclusive after-hours access to the museum and to featured exhibits. GINGER ROOT

As the event began, concert goers lined up around the block and building to enter the Broad. Once they stepped nto the venue, they enjoyed drinks from the outdoor bar and sat on the lawn in front of the stage. As the night progressed, the front of the stage filled with more music fans eager for the start of the show. By the time of Ginger Root’s set, the lawn and front of the stage was at capacity with concert goers standing shoulder to shoulder for a glimpse of the stage.

From Orange County, Cameron Lew, singer-songwriter of Ginger Root incorporates Soul in his Indie music. His musical influences include artists such as Toro y Moi, White Denim, Feist, and more. Along with opening for Thundercat, he has toured with groups such as Khruangbin and Last Dinosaurs. His new EP, "Nisemono" will be released on September 9th. THUNDERCAT

Grammy award winner, Stephen Lee Bruner also known by his stage name, Thundercat, performed a sold-out hometown show in Los Angeles. With high pitched angelic vocals, the Funk Jazz visionary combines various musical influences into contemporary music from hip hop and R&B melodies. During the concert, the instrumentalist performed several live funky bass solos that entranced the audience.

From a musical background, Bruner was surrounded by a musical family and began dabbling in his adolescence. He started playing the bass at five years old and his mother fostered his love of the instrument by paying him twenty dollars to learn to cover a song. Along with musical influences, he is also inspired by comic books, anime, video games, and their soundtracks. He has mentioned in interviews that some of his favorite video game soundtracks are ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ and ‘Halo’ soundtracks due to the melodies, harmonies, and compositions. He incorporates his love of video games in his music videos by featuring video game clips with colorful rhythms and adding a comedic flavor.

Thundercat’s discography matches his real-life persona, funny, laid-back, stylish, composed, and feel good. His music increases with intensity from start to finish with whimsical tempos and ideal progressions. He has collaborated with an array of artists such as Tyler, the Creator, Gorillaz, Flying Lotus, and Kendrick Lamar. He has also toured with artists such as Mac DeMarco and Anderson. Paak. Along with musical collaborations, he is influenced by fashion brands from Gucci, Japanese, and Korean fashion companies.
