Underoath: Erasing Limitations and Continuing a Legacy
“Erase Me” is a bold opening statement from a band that took a near career-ending hiatus from the post-hardcore rock scene a little over five years ago. However, after an almost decade-long pause since their 2013 Farewell Tour and shockwave-inducing disbandment, Underoath has re-emerged once again with a renewed sense of passion and purpose.
Following in the wake of their 2015 Rebirth Tour, Spencer Chamberlain (vocals), Aaron Gillespie (drums), Tim McTague (guitar), Chris Dudley (keyboard), Grant Brandell (bass), and James Smith (guitar), have not only felt the creative pull of crafting a new record, but the need to undergo a massive rebranding effort. Having long been established as a Christian entity, Underoath, disillusioned with the label, shocked listeners with their decision to eliminate it entirely. And with their sixth studio album showcasing edgier language, varying musical style, and a cover depicting a slightly demolished angel statue, both fans and critics alike can’t help but concur that the Underoath of old has indeed been, in some sense, “Erased”. Yet, as the eleven-song collection demonstrates, starting anew can yield significant results.
As Chamberlain himself stated, the phrase, “it’s not Underoath enough” is just one of many limiting mentalities that has been cleansed from the band’s creative vocabulary. And in the place of stifling creative confinement, stands a refined version of a band who’s taken the long way in discovering that the ability to clean the slate is, in fact, a necessary ingredient to reignite the hibernating passion lying dormant below the musical surface.
And having risen from this lengthy sleep of sorts, these giants of the post-hardcore genre have announced what’s shaping up to be a powerful set of live show experiences.
Having teamed up with fellow industry favorites, Dance Gavin Dance, Crown the Empire and The Plot in You, fans can expect a recharged and energized Underoath to light up the stage and to blow them away with their highly anticipated Erase Me Tour. And for lucky California locals, Underoath will bring the action to Los Angeles’ Shrine Expo Hall on November 9 as the sixth stop along their nationwide trek.
