Free Press Summer Festival 2016

 

Free Press Summer Festival featured an array of renowned and local artist performances in the heart of Texas.  The festival showcased a variety of musical genres from Electronic Pop to Metal Rock. The festival featured performances by Collegrove (Lil Wayne & 2 Chainz), Children of Pop, Modest Mouse, Zeds Dead, Jamie xx, Tory Lanez, A$AP Ferg, Logic, and Refused. The two-day music festival is held in Houston, Texas at the Buffalo Bayou's Eleanor Tinsley Park. Guests enjoyed interactive activities such as fireworks, art installations, music workshops, and after parties.

Hip Hop artists, 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne, performed their notable album, ColleGrove, live at the music festival. The Def Jam recorded album was a collaboration between the famous rappers. Their album was produced by renowned record producers: Mike Will Made It, TM88, Infamous, Zaytoven, Lil' C, Metro Boomin, Ben Billion$ and London on da Track. Their modern music incorporates deep poetic lyrics with Jazz and R&B. Their summertime playlist is fitting for a relaxing poolside party or a backyard BBQ.

Chase DeMaster is a local Houston musician and creator of the experimental musical project, Children Of Pop. His DIY Synth-Pop music was originally mastered in his bedroom. His upcoming album, "What Does 69 Mean?," features the pioneering single, “Manic.” His music has an alluring energetic rhythm. He incorporates synthesizers with electronic beats. His groovy music is a journey of heavy drum beats and smooth rhythms.

Zeds Dead are an avante-garde DJ duo from Toronto, Canada. Their inventive music is created and performed by Dylan Mamid and Zachary Rapp-Rovan. The group explores a diverse variety of genres that combine aspects of UK Garage Rock, Dubstep, Hip-Hop, and Electro House music. Their merrymaking jams move the audience to sway and dance. The drum beats and bass lines create a passionate movement of sound.

Jamie Smith, also known as Jamie xx, is an English record producer and established DJ. He works on various musical projects such as solo acts and as a member of the London-based band, The xx. He was nominated for the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album for his album, "In Colour." His songs are similar to the xx in which they provide a mystifying and haunting ambiance. He incorporates female echoes and island rhythms to create an uplifting dance rhythm. He has remixed tracks by innovative artists such as Four Tet and Radiohead

Daystar Peterson also known as Tory Lanez, is a Canadian recording artist signed with Interscope Records. He is a multi-talented artist: songwriter, record producer, director, and fashion designer. He was discovered by his creative mix-tapes: "Conflicts of My Soul: The 416 Story" and "Lost Cause." He will be debuting his album, "I Told You," later this year

Darold Ferguson, Jr., also known as A$AP Ferg, is a rising Hip Hop artist. His music is influenced by his hometown of Harlem, New York. His boisterous lyrics are confessional and tempestuous. His music combines his sharp vocals with female backing vocals and heavy beats. He collaborates with fellow Hip Hop artists such as Future.

Sir Robert Bryson Hall II, also known as Logic, is a multi-talented artist: rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer from Gaithersburg, Maryland. He samples tracks from various Indie Rock and Hip Hop artists. His music style incorporates Dubstep and Hip Hop. The rap style utilized is quick and upbeat blended with forceful instrumentals. 

Refused is a Swedish Hardcore Punk band from Umeå. The band members are vocalist, Dennis Lyxzén, guitarist, Kristofer Steen, drummer, David Sandström, and bassist, Magnus Flagge. Their groups' lyrics are politically influenced and individualistic. Their captivating music captures the listener's attention with fast paced drum beats and electric guitar riffs. Dennis' heavy metal voice is entrancing and soothing. Their invigorating music moves the audience to mosh and dance along with the stirring chords.

Free Press Summer Festival promotes local musicians and visual artists. The festival is organized by Free Press Houston, an independent newspaper and Pegstar.net Presents, a concert promotion company. The festival curates an event compromised array of diverse artists with unique musical styles. The artists differ in their musical genres which provides for a compelling live music experience. Guests can enjoy musical diversity and discover new music.
