Ohana Festival featured live performances by Japanese Breakfast, Father John Misty, HAIM, and more!

 

Ohana Festival brought a diverse group of live music acts to downtown Dana Point, California. The festival featured live performances by Brooks Nielsen, Japanese Breakfast, Father John Misty, HAIM, The Killers, and more! The Pretenders, Eddie Vedder, the Foo Fighters, and The Killers headlined the three-day music festival which took place September 29th through October 1st.

 

JAPANESE BREAKFAST

Japanese Breakfast performed in the early afternoon on a cool breezy Friday as the band kicked off the first day of Ohana Festival. Singer-songwriter, Michelle Zauner, is also a fashion inspiration to fans and has been featured in Vogue Magazine. She displayed her Bedroom Pop genre on stage, literally, as she wore two pillows to her white gown. The audience enjoyed their set and flocked around the stage to watch their show.

FATHER JOHN MISTY

Father John Misty performed at the Tiki stage shortly after Japanese Breakfast’s set. He was accompanied with a full band which provided an orchestral feel to the music. He introduced the band members to the audience which one of the members is originally from Orange County where the festival was taking place. They performed a diverse set list of tracks from albums, ‘I Love You, Honeybear’, ‘Pure Comedy’, and more! He joked with the crowd and mentioned this performance was the first time he had left his home in awhile.

Father John Misty along with the audience danced and swayed along to the dreamy melodies. He sang meaningfully into the songs he performed and transported the audience members into an ethereal dream state. He informed his fans that he loved them and enjoyed their enthusiasm. HAIM

HAIM brought the energy to the stage as the sister trio immediately enticed the audience with their high-strung energy. This was the last show of the year for HAIM who were on tour with Taylor Swift for the Eras tour. The Eras tour was one of the most popular and highest grossing tours of the year. HAIM also celebrated the tenth anniversary of their first album, ‘Days Are Gone.’ which was released in 2013.

The HAIM trio performed a lengthy powerful set of tracks from this album which fans sang along to. The band have a musical history set in fate and determination. They were discovered while performing music festivals and noticed by artist, Jay-Z. The hardworking and extremely talented sisters have worked their way up the ranks from performing various music tours, festivals, and shows. Their music videos are memorable and feature the iconic neighborhoods of Los Angeles County. Alana Haim, Este Haim, and Daniella Haim have debuted their acting careers in the critically acclaimed film, ‘Licorice Pizza.’

During their Ohana music festival performance, the trio displayed their multi-instrumentalist talents, Danielle Haim sang songs while performing individual songs on guitar and then switching to perform the following song on the drums. Danielle Haim and Este Haim joked with their younger sister, Alana Haim, and informed the audience that she was ‘very single.’ Alana jokingly mentioned that was she was looking at the audience and noticed many attractive audience members at the festival.

THE KILLERS

The Killers performed the grand finale Ohana festivalgoers were waiting for. The crowd scrambled before their set to grab a spot at the bleachers or to stand in the crowd for the ideal video. The Killers teased the audience prior to the show when they displayed momentary images or lights from the show to come such as ‘The Killers’ back-drop on the screen or a glimpse of a strobe lights. The show began when the stage went dark and they performed Frank Sinatra’s track ‘Luck Be a Lady.’

Audience members quickly grabbed their phones and raised them up high to be ready to document ‘The Killers’ first song performance. They kicked-off the show with a fan favorite, ‘Mr. Brightside’. This iconic song was debut track off their first album, ‘Hot Fuss,’ which was released in 2004. It was one of the first songs written by Brandon Flowers and Dave Keuning from The Killers. The group performed various memorable tracks from their ‘Hot Fuss' album which fans sang along to. The Killers also debuted their most recent track, ‘Your Side of Town.’ This track is a blend of dark wave and electronic Pop Rock and is reminiscent of music from New Wave bands like Depeche mode.

The Killers’ lead singer, Brandon Flowers, was extremely ecstatic and energetic throughout their musical performance. Dressed in a dapper black formal attire, he proudly boasted and promoted the group’s origins as he displayed Las Vegas on the stage backdrop. He spoke of the gratitude he had for their fans support over their years and wanted to ensure that this concert was the best show they have and will experience.

The Killers welcomed unto the stage a surprise guest during one of their song performances. Eddie Vedder, lead singer of Pearl Jam, joined the Killers on stage and performed Tom Petty’s ‘The Waiting’ with the group. The anniversary of Tom Petty’s death is October 2nd which the song performance was lovely tribute to the legendary artist.
